How Safe Is Dental Sedation? Everything You Should Know

If you need to get oral surgery in Rhode Island, you may be wondering if you can be sedated for your procedure. And if you are sedated, is it safe? Are there any risks of serious complications if you choose to be sedated at the RI Oral Surgery & Implant Center? Find out now!

Understanding The Most Common Types Of Dental Sedation

Before we dive into the safety of sedation, let’s go over the basics of the most common types of dental sedation.

  • Nitrous sedation – In nitrous sedation, you’ll breathe a mixture of nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and oxygen through a mask, making you feel relaxed, comfortable, and calm during your procedure.

  • Oral sedation – Oral sedation uses a variety of different sedative pills, which you will take before your appointment at our office. You will feel groggy, and you may fall asleep or even forget what happens during your appointment.
  • IV sedation – IV sedation uses the same types of drugs as oral sedation. However, they're injected right into a vein, which means that the medication begins working more quickly and has more potent effects.

  • General anesthesia / Deep Sedation – General anesthesia in our office is also provided through an IV; however, additional medications are used to provide a deeper sedation in order to improve the comfort of patients undergoing more complex procedures.

Is Sedation Safe? Yes – And It’s A Great Option For Oral Surgery

It’s impossible to completely rule out every possible complication when it comes to dental sedation. However, the risks are extremely low. The drugs used for dental sedation have been used successfully for decades, with very low rates of complications.

And at the RI Oral Surgery & Implant Center, we take every step possible to make sure that you can be sedated safely. Before you’re sedated, Dr. Ray English and our team will learn more about your medical history, any prescription drugs or supplements that you’re taking, and your overall health, which will help us determine if you’re a good candidate for sedation.

If you are approved for sedation at our Rhode Island dental office, our team will use the latest techniques and best practices to ensure that you are safe and comfortable throughout the procedure.
